Ramadan Musings '12 - Day 1

3:36pm, Mordor Standard Time

Approx 3hrs and 40ish minutes till sunset

I’m not hungry, but that’s nothing new, I have a tendency to forget that I haven’t eaten on normal days. Wot I *am* is thirsty, and all I can think is ‘the first cut is the deeeepest, baby I know.’ It’s the closest I’ve got to a pep talk.

It's that time of year when I'm seriously considering rewatching the new series of Doctor Who. I still have to catch up on The Mentalist and White Collar, among other things, but my heart yearns for Eccly and Tennant right now. If internet were not deplorable, I'd be streaming it on Amazon...I was going to type out 'Netflix' but those...lovely lovely people *cough*....are telling me that it's not available in my region.

Also, Big Time Rush. Yeah, bringing them back up again, because I love them and have managed to get others to do so to. Now, don't get me wrong, it's all silly and they are nothing but a boy band at the end of the day, but (as I think I said once, a long time ago), if you ever need anything nice and light and entertaining and full of ridiculousness and fun, go watch the show. Ignore the absurdity of the premise and give it a shot. Don't knock it till you've tried it.

Hallo all! It's officially Christmas on this side of the Atlantic, so I wanted to wish all of you a lovely, wonderful, Christmas! I'm going to be travelling later today to the Motherland, which should be fun, so I thought I'd send some Christmas spirit early so that I'm not abandoning this blog, once more. Also, who doesn't love Doctor Who themed madness?

I have a couple of lovely videos that I'm sure all of you will find wonderful, if you're fans of Doctor Who, but you're just going to have to wait for those.

I don't quite know when I turned into the advocate/champion for the first season of the New Series, but I think I've done a very good job of it. I honestly think that it's a shame for people to just jump on the Matt Smith bandwagon without at least giving Eccly and Tennant a try, mostly because I think once they do they'll realize why it's even remotely close to as awesome as it is with Matt Smith. I mean, don't get me wrong, I adore Matt Smith. I think he's quirky and weird and great, mostly because  (and I might have said this before) of his Willy Wonka-esque mannerisms and eccentricities. But that being said, he really has got nothing on Eccly and Tennant's humanity, their passion and devotion and human connections (not to mention the eight Doctors before).

I almost feel like without knowing, really, everything that the Doctor has lost, you can't quite understand all his choices and his reasoning.

A Message from the Doctor

Seeing this actually made me feel a lot better, despite the pouring rain and the massive amounts of work I have to do and the less than stellar grades and the sheer insanity that is living in New York. I think it's his face more than anything, and hearing him say 'Fantastic!' in my mind.

The Wedding of River Song

I've finally seen "The Wedding of River Song," and let me tell you I think I enjoyed that finale better than last season's finale. True, it was quite predictable (if anyone couldn't guess wot the question was, I'm surprised), a bit repetitive (if I hear anyone say 'it must be done! time is disintegrating!" one more time I will stab them) and a slight cop out (still don't know his name, thought apparently silence will fall if that's said, we've been prepared for him to die and they introduce the thing that will prevent that half-way through the season, etc.), but the moments of humour were great, the Silence were sufficiently creepy, and his desperation to remain alive was quite on point.

David Tennant's face of the day

I've taken to staying up till 4 or 5 in the morning, just reading, because it's the only time in the day I can allocate to 'me' time that isn't constantly interuppted or tainted with the thoughts that I should be doing something more productive.

Apparently, the way my priorities lie, I value reading over sleep.

I'm currently reading a Young Adult ghost/fantasy thriller called The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson, the first in the "Shades of London" series, and decided to put my two cents in about it in a valiant effort to procrastinate. I'm going to post it later, that was a forewarning, so bear with me.

I honestly can't believe that it's already Sunday. This weekend has gone exceptionally fast, and now that I'm at the end of it I'm wondering where it all went, other than to the N64 and Mario Kart and a whole lot of 30 Rock. One episode of Series 6 left for me to actually start ranting/speculating about Doctor Who, so just bear with me guys.

In the mean time, it's apparently Doctor Who Day! Unofficially, of course, and simply because if you write out the date in the European way it would be 9/10/11, and nerds/fans will find any way possible to celebrate there universes of choice. So happy Doctor Who Day to all you Whovians, and potentially Whovians out there! I'm going to, unfortunately, have to do something other than just lounge at home which means venturing out into the big bad world, so wish me luck.

So many things to get done, so little time to get it done. But I've incorporated reading some news articles into my bleary, 'don't-want-to-get-out-of-bed' mornings by downloading fantastic newsreader apps like Zite and AOL's Editions (the organization in both apps of the articles and topics are really nice and simple, with Editions looking like a magazine and Zite reminding me of the NYTimes online set up, but catered to the topics I want to read. As much as I enjoyed Pulse, it's not very aesthetically pleasing to me, or very creative either). That way I feel slightly productive as my body protests movement.

Right now though, right now I have to design a book cover (including back flap/author bio/copy) for my Intro to Book Publishing class. Did I ever mention how I am artistically challenged? Because I am. Thankfully though, I have an amazingly artistic roommate who can interpret my rough sketches and vague ramblings and vision for this fake cover very well (mashallah) and I figure that works too.

Off to work on the back cover/author bio. I'll come back, don't worry.

It's about the companions

The companions shape and make the Doctor who he is. Each one changes him and affects him in a different way. They each teach him wot it means to be human, as well as wot it means to be a Time Lord, a defender, a champion. They are his soul, his values, his friends and loved ones. The show is so much more than just about the Doctor and his adventures, it's about wot each companion brings to the adventure and wot they teach him about who he is and could be.

I think my favourites are Thorgi and Gryffincorg, though the Dogtor in a fez is quite entertaining too. Bring on the Doctor Who and Harry Potter and superhero spoofs!

As someone who absolutely adores Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor, anything that even mildly refers to him makes me go "I want that!" especially when the design is borderline subtle. I mean, okay the TARDIS isn't exactly subtle to anyone who knows anything about sci-fi or the world of geekdom, or has eyes, but you get my point.

The point is that seeing this design (available in both sticker and t-shirt form) on redbubble made me quite happy, especially since that's the phrase that made Rose go slow-motion running into the TARDIS. I can just hear Nine's voice in my head saying it, and that little sly smile as he leans against the TARDIS door.

So much love. Thought I'm not sure whether to get the sticker or the shirt, considering that I have to save money to buy presents for my lovely roommates for Eid (the lovely day of celebration after the month of Ramadan).

Updates!

So, this is basically how I feel right now: 

for several reasons. First and foremost, the whole actually being graduate from college has begun to sink in nice and steady, and, most surprisingly, it isn't an unpleasant sinking in. True, I might have cheated a little bit due to the fact that I'm just continuing with my Master's, but still...graduating is graduating. Secondly, we've almost completely moved into our new, much spacier and prettier, apartment, while still managing to remain in the city. And thirdly, I'm finished building my bed and putting all the covers on and I've also built my bookshelf and arranged more than half of my books on it. The room itself is being cleared out more and more each day which also makes me happy and makes me realize how much nicer it is. All that's missing is a slight personal touch to the walls/some decor, but it's been less than a week so I'm not worried about that.

Good times, right? I can't wait till we're fully settled in/have the wall built so my lovely Viking has a room of his own. I feel like then, summer will really start. Until that moment, it wont feel real...because that sense that there's still so much to do looms (as opposed to just hangs) over the whole apartment. But this means I should be on more regularly, sharing wonders of the world, by next week. You can admit it, you missed me.
